Scouts BSA Troop 97

Why Scouts?

Scouts BSA (formerly Boy Scouts, now open to all youth ages 11-18) is led by the scouts, with supervision and guidance from adults. The scouts work together for fun and skill development, building their abilities in the outdoors, STEM, arts, and other areas through the structure provided by merit badges, rank advancement, and a variety of youth leadership roles. Unlike some extracurricular activities (e.g., with regular team practices), scouting is relatively flexible. Scouts go to the subset of activities which interest them and work for their schedule. Parents and guardians are welcome to become involved, but there is no expectation that they do so.

Why Troop 97?

Since 1948, Troop 97 has been a particularly active troop, with weekly Tuesday meetings, monthly outings, and an annual week together at summer camp. Weekly meetings, planned by the scouts, include games; classes taught by the scouts and by guests; and teamwork toward rank and merit badge requirements. Our meetings are held at Beth El Congregation, a Conservative synagogue, and our charter organization is Har Sinai – Oheb Shalom Congregation, a Reform synagogue. Our troop has a long history of religious diversity, with scouts from all faiths, including from across the Jewish denominations. The troop as a whole is not strictly kosher or sabbath-observant, but we are experienced in accommodating varying levels of observance (Jewish and non-Jewish).
